Cricket: Saints or Green Machine? Tough Call

The St Charles College first XI cricket team have never won the KZN Inland region T20 tournament, hence the dream of competing for the KZN Dolphins Franchise gold medal match has never materialised.

A fighting 40 from Thamsanqa Khumalo during the Coca Cola Schools T20 Regional Finals against Clifton College at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Friday, 3 February, set up an eight run win for Glenwood in an exciting but low scoring affair.

Cricket: Kearsney Clinch T20 Final

Match Report: Hilton vs Kearsney in T20 Final- Hilton College won the toss and put Kearsney in to bat on a good batting surface prepared for the T20 Final held at the Maritzburg Oval last night (Monday). Kearsney came out firing, but lost regular wickets with their gung-ho approach, losing the first wicket on the fourth ball of the innings.

A brilliant victory by Menlopark over the number one side in the country, Waterkloof, was perhaps the biggest result of the past week and although Menlopark managed to climb up to their highest spot on the Powerade Performance Rankings of the year, Waterkloof still remain entrenched at the top.

Cricket: Judges Rules No Legal Right To Meddle

Pietermaritzburg attorney Pranesh Indrajith, who resorted to the High Court in an attempt to have his son reinstated as the first team cricket captain at St Charles College, has lost his case last week after the judge ruled he had no legal right to meddle with the internal affairs of the school - and even if he did, he would not have found in the father's favour, says a report in The Mercury.

On Saturday the 18 January, 2013 eagerly awaited clash between Glenwood High School and Westville took place at Bowdens Field Westville.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that Dave Karlsen is as much a fixture at St Charles College as is the school’s magnificent St Charles Cricket Oval.

Cricket: Match Report Glenwood v St Charles

Glenwood Wrap up Cricket Season with a Win

The final cricket match for Glenwood took place in Durban on Saturday 2 November, 2013 as they took on the dangerous St Charles team. Fortunately the rain stayed away allowing for a full day of exciting school boy cricket. St Charles won the toss and chose to bat first and the openers initially survived the opening spell but eventually lost their first wicket when St Charles opener Z Kourtsouris edged one to the slips giving Glenwood’s C Pearce his first wicket. A few errors in the field allowed for a 3rd wicket stand of 58 between M Mortman (43) and B Philpott (52) before A Phehlukwayo broke the partnership. From then onwards the St Charles batsmen couldn’t maintain a decent partnership and lost wickets at irregular intervals. Glenwood’s spinner S Nhlebela proved to be a problem for the batsmen and was managing to use the pitch to his advantage taking 3-31 in his 10 overs. St Charles eventually ended their innings on 199/9 in their 50 overs.

Glenwood’s innings started slowly and the loss of 2 quick wickets didn’t help their cause as they reached 41/2 after the 10th over. The powerful G Wissing managed to hit a quick 28 but it was the 4th wicket stand of 90 runs between A Phehlukwayo (85*) and M Hay (27) that helped Glenwood chase down the target. Phehlukwayo’s mature innings of 85 not out consisted of four 4’s and four 6’s proving to be a major contributor to Glenwood’s 4 wicket win. Glenwood High will now focus on the T20 series for the remainder of the year and hope to keep up their unbeaten streak in this year’s series.

Kearsney’s 1st XI played their first match of the current season at home on the Smith Oval and they did not disappoint, beating Clifton by 118 runs.

School cricket fight in court

Being in the School’s First team was important for a boy’s CV and there was still time for him to lead his school even though it was weeks before he wrote his matric finals, the advocate representing a disgruntled father told the Pietermaritzburg High Court yesterday, reports The Mercury.

Pranesh Indrajith, the father of Pavishkar, 18, is fighting a decision by his son’s school, St Charles College, to substitute the pupil with someone else as the cricket captain.

Avril Potgieter SC, representing the father, told Judge Rashid Vahed the case was important because being removed as captain was “detrimental to his future career in cricket”.

The judge queried whether the case was “academic”, considering that the pupil would now be giving attention to his matric exams and not on sport.

Advocate Alastair Dickson SC, representing St Charles College, said cricket matches were played in the fourth school term and during the Michaelmas holidays (in September).

Dickson wanted the case to be dismissed while Potgieter wanted it to be referred for oral evidence to be heard because there was a dispute in facts.

Dickson said the court had no jurisdiction to hear the matter and doing so would open the “floodgates” to cases that were irrelevant. On the merits, he said, the boy was removed as captain because he had dropped in form. He had scored only 17 runs in seven matches.

Dickson added that sport was part of education and Pavishkar had to come to terms with the decision.

Potgieter said the rights of children needed to be protected and the father approached the court to undo an injustice.

She submitted the decision had to be set aside because not all six members of the school’s selection committee had taken it.

Pavishkar had scored a total despite the form, he was appointed as cricket captain. It’s not clean-cut that he was dropped solely on form… if his form was so bad, why was he selected to represent the KZN Midlands?” asked the advocate.

The judge replied that different criteria might have been used.

Potgieter said Pavishkar’s ability as a bowler was not criticised by the school and therefore the same was acceptable to the requirements of being captain of the first team.

“It is submitted that the reason for dropping Pavishkar, based only on his batting score for the last quarter of 2012, was not reasonable and rational.”

The judge said he would try to give judgment next week.

Meanwhile St Charles College have struggled so far at Oppenheimer week having lost to St.Alban’s College, St. Stithians and Hudson Park.

Cricket: Weather Rains on Kirsten's Parade

KwaZulu-Natal has been drenched in the fourth term with few cricket teams playing more than a couple of matches in the season.

Don't underestimate the KZN U19A Inland side that has just been selected just because they haven't played much cricket due to the rain in the KZN, they are a strong outfit that will pose a few problems for the teams they meet at the end of the year.
